My undergraduate thesis advisor was Martín Sambarino. I studied his and Enrique Pujal's proof of a form of the Palis conjecture for C^1 surface diffeomorphisms.
I didn't really understand the work too well so I wouldn't recommend reading this for insight. But it was a good formative experience.
